Video compression with complete information for pre-recorded sources

چکیده
Traditional video compression algorithms focus on causal processing of the video data. The causal constraint is necessary for real-time video programs where delay is an important consideration. However, many video programs such as movies are pre-recorded and can be processed offline prior to compression. This thesis proposes using pre-processing for pre-recorded video programs to obtain useful information for compression. By exploiting information obtained about a program prior to compression, better video quality can be achieved. In particular, as an example of how complete noncausal knowledge of a video program can be used to improve performance over causal knowledge, a new iterative algorithm is developed for a buffer-constrained quantization problem to reduce the number of quantization changes in MPEG-2 intraframe video compression. This algorithm is shown to be optimal under certain conditions. By introducing a noncausally computed parameter into the distortion function, experiments have shown that improved and more constant video quality can be delivered using the noncausal approach relative to a traditional causal approach. Gains of up to 1.0 dB in PSNR were observed in multiscene sequences, corresponding to savings of up to 10% in bit rate. Thesis Supervisor: Jae S. Lim Title: Professor of Electrical Engineering

A New Unequal Error Protection Technique Based on the Mutual Information of the MPEG-4 Video Frames over Wireless Networks
The performance of video transmission over wireless channels is limited by the channel noise. Thus many error resilience tools have been incorporated into the MPEG-4 video compression method. In addition to these tools, the unequal error protection (UEP) technique has been proposed to protect the different parts in an MPEG-4 video packet with different channel coding rates based on the rate...
متن کاملFast Intra Mode Decision for Depth Map coding in 3D-HEVC Standard
three dimensional- high efficiency video coding (3D-HEVC) is the expanded version of the latest video compression standard, namely high efficiency video coding (HEVC), which is used to compress 3D videos. 3D videos include texture video and depth map. Since the statistical characteristics of depth maps are different from those of texture videos, new tools have been added to the HEVC standard fo...
متن کاملEfficient Compression from Non-ergodic Sources with Genetic Algorithms
Several lossless data compression schemes have been proposed over the past years. Since Shannon developed information theory in his seminal paper, however, the problem of data compression has hinged (even though not always explicitly) on the consideration of an ergodic source. In dealing with such sources one has to cope with the problem of defining a priori the minimum sized symbol. The design...

The paper provides an overview of the fundamental issues confronting scalable video compression, together with some of the most promising general approaches to addressing these issues. For motivation, the paper sketches a compelling application in remote browsing of video, whose realization is not possible without efficient highly scalable video compression technology. The paper outlines some o...
متن کاملDistributed Video Coding: Principles and Evaluation of Wavelet-Based Schemes
The current scenario considered for video coding and transmission, as assumed by the MPEG standards, uses complex encoding algorithms, including motion compensation and multi-hypothesis rate-distortion optimized procedures, to achieve high compression efficiency. This is the right solution when the encoding is carried out by high performance devices, while the receivers (e.g., handheld devices ...
